Best family liability insurance in Belgium (2026)

Updated · figures checked 2 November 2026

The short version

  • Family liability is not compulsory in Belgium, but the regulator calls it strongly recommended and it is one of the cheapest policies you can buy. Most newcomers should take it in their first weeks.
  • ING Assurance Familiale is the cheapest in the official comparator and suits ING customers, but it does not cover things you borrow or rent, and its insurer entity should be confirmed.
  • If you want to read the cover in English, KBC Brussels is the only insurer where we confirmed English pages, and it covers goods in your care.
  • Before you choose, check whether goods in your care (a borrowed laptop, a rented bike, a holiday flat) are covered. That is the exclusion behind many refused claims.

Your child kicks a ball through the neighbour’s window. Your dog bites a cyclist. A glass of wine ends up on a friend’s laptop. In Belgium, the insurance that pays for this kind of damage to other people is family liability insurance, called RC familiale, RC vie privée or BA vie privée in French, and gezinsaansprakelijkheid in Dutch. Belgians often call it simply “la familiale” or “de familiale”.

This guide is for newcomers who want to set it up in their first weeks. It is a small contract with a low yearly premium, and banks and insurers usually offer it when you open an account or take out tenant insurance. We compared eleven insurers. Unlike most insurance products in Belgium, here we have official prices: the FSMA, the financial regulator, publishes a comparator on its Wikifin site, and we used it for a single person and a family with a 35-year-old policyholder.

What decides the choice is less the price, since the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive is small, than three details: whether goods in your care are covered, the deductible, and whether you can read the contract and talk to the insurer in a language you understand.

How to choose family liability insurance

What it covers and what it does not

Family liability (RC familiale / BA vie privée / gezinsaansprakelijkheid) covers damage you cause to third parties in private life; it does not cover risks under another compulsory liability insurance such as car accidents. Wikifin calls it strongly recommended. (source, checked 2 November 2026) In practice it covers the members of your household in their private life, at home, in the street and on holiday; check the territorial scope in the conditions if you travel often. Typical cases: damage caused by your children, by your pets, by you on a bicycle or e-scooter, or at a friend’s house. It pays the other person, not you: if you break your own phone, nothing is covered.

What is not covered: car accidents (they fall under compulsory motor insurance), damage caused in your job, which is not private life, intentional damage, and, very often, damage to things that were in your care.

Is it compulsory?

No. There is no legal obligation to have it, as the Wikifin page on family liability explains (checked 2 November 2026). Under Belgian civil law you are personally liable for damage you cause, and bodily injury claims can be large, which is why the regulator recommends it.

Goods in your care: the exclusion that matters

This is the point most expats miss. The law (art. 6, 7° of the Royal Decree of 12 January 1984) allows insurers to exclude damage to goods in the insured's custody (e.g. a borrowed tool); 25% of the 362 liability requests to the Ombudsman in 2025 were refusals, often about entrusted goods. (source, checked 2 November 2026) Typical examples: a laptop your employer lent you for home use, a bike you rented, the flat you rent for a holiday, a friend’s camera you borrowed. Some insurers cover these goods in the base contract with a ceiling, others only through a paid option, and some not at all. The comparison table shows it per insurer in the “Goods in your care covered” column.

If you live in a furnished flat or often borrow equipment, this column matters more than the premium difference.

Price: use the official comparator

The FSMA's Wikifin comparator lists 12 family liability products for a single 35-year-old, from €54.14 (ING Assurance Familiale) to €84.57 (Ethias) per year. (source, checked 2 November 2026) The gap is small in absolute terms. The FSMA comparator on Wikifin lets you change the profile (age, household, option for legal counsel), so run it with your own situation. It is in French and Dutch only, but a translation tool in your browser is enough to use it.

Two caveats. Not every insurer is in the comparator: Yuzzu and Belfius Direct are not, so their prices are those from their own sites, or unknown. And insurers’ websites sometimes show a different “from” price than the comparator because the profile differs; both are valid for their own profile.

Deductible and limits

The deductible applies to material damage. Most are indexed amounts that rise each year, and a few insurers offer an English deductible option, under which you pay nothing if the damage is above a threshold. Bodily injury is usually covered without deductible. Where published, cover limits run into the millions, so they rarely decide the choice.

Household changes

The policy covers the people living with you. When a partner moves in, a child is born, or a student child moves out, tell the insurer: some prices change with household size, and you want the right people named. If you move to Belgium alone and your family joins later, the single profile becomes a family profile on that date.

Complaints

If the insurer refuses a claim, write to its complaints service first, then to the Insurance Ombudsman. The ombudsman’s report gives figures per insurance branch, not per company, so complaint numbers do not enter our scores. All insurers here are on the FSMA register, except that we could not confirm on the register which entity carries ING’s product.

The family liability insurers compared

The table ranks the insurers with our scoring method. Prices for a single person and a family come from the FSMA comparator, profile aged 35, without the legal counsel option.

1. ING Assurance Familiale (NN) 8.3/10

Ranked 1 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: ING customers wanting the cheapest basic cover.

ING sells family liability under the name ING Assurance Familiale; the product is linked to the insurer NN. In the official comparator it is the cheapest of all: €54.14/year (FSMA comparator, product ING Assurance Familiale) for a single person, €60.04/year (FSMA comparator, product ING Assurance Familiale) for a family. The deductible is €250.00, which is low.

The trade-off is the cover of goods in your care: No (base cover). If you damage a borrowed laptop, a rented bike or a furnished holiday flat, the base contract will not pay. For a newcomer living in a furnished flat or using an employer’s equipment at home, that can matter more than the saving.

Buying remotely: Yes. The comparator says the product can be bought and handled at a distance and in the ING network. English: Not checked. We did not check ING’s own insurance pages for an English version, so ask your branch or check the ING app.

One more caveat: we could not confirm on the FSMA register which legal entity carries the risk, so the regulatory status is marked unverified. Ask ING for the insurer’s name and register number before signing.

ING suits ING customers who want the cheapest basic cover and rarely borrow or rent valuable items. It does not suit people who need goods in their care covered.

2. KBC / KBC Brussels 6.8/10

Ranked 2 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: English speakers who want to read the cover in English.

KBC sells family insurance through branches, agents and online, and KBC Brussels publishes the product page in English: Yes. For a newcomer, being able to read which situations are covered and excluded is worth more than a small price difference.

The official comparator puts it in the middle of the range: €72.84/year (FSMA comparator, product Police familiale KBC) for a single person and €81.00/year (FSMA comparator, product Police familiale KBC) for a family. The deductible is €250.00, among the lowest in the guide. Bodily injury is covered without deductible, with high limits for both bodily and material damage.

Goods in your care: Yes, within a ceiling stated on the page. KBC also pays the victim side: if someone damages your property and cannot pay, KBC steps in up to a stated amount, more for bodily injuries. Legal protection for private life is included.

Buying remotely: Yes. Claims can be filed through the app. We did not confirm that the contract documents are in English, only the product page.

KBC suits English speakers who want to understand their cover, families who borrow or rent equipment, and anyone already banking with KBC. If the lowest premium is all you want, ING and AXA cost less in the comparator.

3. AXA Belgium 5.5/10

Ranked 3 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Buyers wanting low price plus an option for borrowed items.

AXA Belgium’s product, Confort Vie Privée, is the second cheapest for a single person in the comparator: €64.20/year (FSMA comparator, product Confort Vie Privée). For a family it costs €79.25/year (FSMA comparator, product Confort Vie Privée).

The cover of goods in your care is Yes, through a Premium option for a small extra premium that covers objects entrusted to you or rented by you up to a stated ceiling. That makes AXA one of the cheapest ways to get that protection. AXA also includes free bike assistance.

The deductible needs a check. The comparator shows €340.51, while AXA’s own product page states a lower figure for property damage. The difference probably comes from the profile or index date, but ask AXA which one applies to your contract.

Buying: Yes, with a price in a few minutes on the site, and broker support if you want it. English: No.

4. Belfius 5.4/10

Ranked 4 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Belfius or DVV customers.

Belfius bank sells family liability to its customers through the app and branches. The comparator gives €66.30/year (FSMA comparator, product L'assurance familiale app-normale) for a single and €78.00/year (FSMA comparator, product L'assurance familiale app-normale) for a family, and Belfius’s own page states a lower starting price for basic cover of a single person. The same product is also sold under the DVV brand.

Deductible: €325.93. An Extended option, cheap according to the comparator, adds an English deductible and the cover of goods entrusted to you or rented: Yes.

Buying: Yes, but in practice through the Belfius app or a branch, which means being a bank customer. English: No.

5. Allianz 4.8/10

Ranked 5 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Allianz Benelux sells family liability under the name Family Plan and is on the FSMA list of authorised Belgian insurers. Its own website returned a bot check when we tried to read it, so everything we know comes from the official FSMA comparator. There, the price is €71.35/year (FSMA comparator, product FAMILY PLAN) for a single person and €89.20/year (FSMA comparator, product FAMILY PLAN) for a family, with a deductible of €309.34. The comparator did not list it for the two-adult profile, so ask for that price if you live as a couple.

Goods in your care are covered in the base contract (Yes). That is the point that matters most for newcomers who borrow a laptop, rent a bike or stay in holiday flats, and some policies leave it out. Remote subscription is No (comparator: no remote subscription): you sign through an Allianz agent or a broker. Whether Allianz serves customers in English is not published, because we could not read its site.

It suits newcomers who already work with a broker, want goods in their care covered without an option, and are comfortable reading a contract in French or Dutch. If you want to sign online today or read the cover in English, look at the online insurers or KBC Brussels instead. 6. AG Insurance 4.8/10

Ranked 6 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Families of 3+ who use a broker or BNP Paribas Fortis.

AG Insurance’s Top Familiale has an unusual pricing: the comparator shows €74.00/year (FSMA comparator, product Top Familiale) for a single person and €74.00/year (FSMA comparator, product Top Familiale) for a family. The price does not change with household size, so a large family pays the same as a single person, which makes AG cheap for families and average for singles.

Deductible: €309.53 in the comparator, while AG’s product page states a different figure for material damage; ask which applies. Goods in your care: Yes.

If you live in a furnished flat or borrow equipment

Furnished rentals are common for newcomers, and the furniture belongs to the landlord. Fire and water damage to the building is a matter for your tenant insurance, but movable items, a borrowed laptop or a rented bike fall into the “goods in your care” question. Choose an insurer that covers them in the base contract, such as KBC, AG, P&V or Baloise in the table, or take the option at AXA or Belfius. Check the ceiling against the value of what you use.

If you have children or pets

Children are the main reason Belgian families hold this policy. Damage caused by a child at school, at a friend’s house or on a school trip is a typical claim. If you have a pet, ask the insurer in writing how it is covered and whether it must be declared. For families, AG’s flat price and Belfius’s or AXA’s family prices are the lowest in the comparator after ING.

If you live alone

A single person pays the lowest premiums. ING, AXA and Belfius lead the comparator for singles. Add the cover of goods in your care if you use equipment that is not yours, and remember to switch to a family profile when someone moves in.

Step by step: taking out family liability insurance

  1. Run the FSMA comparator on Wikifin with your age and household. Note the three cheapest products and whether they cover goods in your care.
  2. Decide on options: goods in your care, an English deductible, legal counsel.
  3. Check how you can buy: online, in the app, through a broker or adviser. Some products require being a bank customer.
  4. Ask for the general conditions before signing, and read the exclusions, especially entrusted goods and pets.
  5. Name everyone in the household correctly.
  6. Sign and keep the certificate in case your landlord, school or club asks for proof.
  7. Update the insurer when your household changes or you move.

Our verdict

ING Assurance Familiale (NN) comes out ahead in the table. ING Assurance Familiale is the cheapest in the official comparator and the pick for ING customers who rarely borrow or rent valuable items, but it does not cover borrowed or rented items, and its insurer entity should be confirmed. For English-speaking newcomers, KBC Brussels is the better choice: English pages, a low deductible and goods in your care covered, at a mid-range price. AXA and Belfius offer low prices with a paid option for borrowed goods. AG is good value for larger families through a broker or BNP Paribas Fortis, and P&V offers broad cover through an adviser. Yuzzu, Baloise, Ethias and Belfius Direct make most sense when you already insure something else there.
