Best savings account in Belgium (2026)

Updated · figures checked 2 November 2026

The short version

  • For a lump sum with no cap, Keytrade Bank High Fidelity had the best uncapped total we found, with English pages and terms.
  • For money you add each month, the capped booster accounts (Belfius Flow, Hello bank! Boost, vdk Ritme, Argenta, KBC, Crelan) pay far more, but only on a fixed monthly amount.
  • MeDirect Essential pays most of its return as base rate, so it suits money you may need before twelve months.
  • The fidelity premium is only paid on money left twelve months without interruption, and the tax exemption on regulated savings applies to Belgian residents only, per person across all accounts.

Belgian savings accounts work differently from most countries. The rate you see advertised is usually two numbers added together: a small base rate paid on everything, and a much larger fidelity premium paid only on money that stays put for a full year. On top of that, regulated accounts have a tax exemption that makes them attractive for residents, and banks now split their accounts into categories with monthly or balance caps.

This guide is for expats who have a Belgian current account and want to put savings aside, whether that is an emergency fund, a deposit for a flat, or money moved over from home. We compared the regulated savings accounts of eleven banks on what they published on 2 November 2026: the best capped account, the best uncapped account, the two parts of the rate, the limits and how you open the account.

What decides the choice is simple. How much do you want to park, and will you add a fixed amount each month or put in a lump sum? Then check whether you can deal with the bank in English and whether you can open the account without a branch visit.

How to choose a savings account in Belgium

Base rate and fidelity premium

Wikifin, the financial education site of the FSMA, explains the rule that drives every Belgian savings account: The fidelity premium is only earned on amounts that stay on the account for 12 months without interruption; the base rate is earned from the day after deposit at the latest. (source, checked 2 November 2026) In practice, if you deposit money in March and withdraw it in January, you get only the base rate on it. If you withdraw part of a balance, the bank’s savers’ information sheet explains which deposits the withdrawal is taken from.

So the “total” in the table only applies to money that stays for a year. If you think you may need the money sooner, look at the base rate column, not the total.

Categories A, B and C

Since early 2024 every regulated account carries a category letter. Since 15 January 2024 every document on a regulated savings account must state its category: A (no conditions), B (amount conditions such as a monthly or balance cap), C (reserved for an age group). (source, checked 2 November 2026) The best rates are almost all on category B accounts, because the cap limits what the bank pays out. Category A accounts take any amount and have no conditions. A sensible set-up for many savers is one category B booster account fed by a monthly standing order, plus one category A account for the rest.

The tax exemption, and who gets it

Regulated savings are attractive because of a tax rule: Interest on regulated savings accounts is tax-free up to €1,020 per taxpayer per year; above that, 15% withholding tax applies. (source, checked 2 November 2026) For a joint account: For an account in the name of two spouses or legal cohabitants, the exemption is €2,040 per year. (source, checked 2 November 2026) The ceiling is set for each income year; banks print it on their savers’ information sheets. The €1,020 ceiling applies to income year 2026, as stated in banks' legally required savings information sheets (e.g. Argenta, ING). (source, checked 2 November 2026)

Two points matter for expats. First, the exemption is per taxpayer, across all your regulated accounts at all banks, even though some bank sheets say “per account”. The Wikifin page on interest from regulated savings explains that if the total goes above the ceiling and not enough tax was deducted, you declare the excess. Second, The exemption on bank sheets is described as applying to natural persons with residence in Belgium. (source, checked 2 November 2026) If you are not yet registered as resident, or you keep tax residence elsewhere, ask the bank how it will treat your interest.

Non-regulated accounts are different: Interest on non-regulated savings accounts is taxed at 30% withholding tax from the first cent. (source, checked 2 November 2026) That is why this guide focuses on regulated accounts.

The FPS Finance page on investment income was behind a bot check when we checked; the figures above come from Wikifin and the banks’ legally required sheets.

Deposit protection

Belgian banks are covered by the Belgian deposit guarantee scheme. Two banks here are branches of foreign EU banks: Keytrade Bank (France) and Triodos (Netherlands). For them, deposit protection follows the home-country scheme. Keytrade states it is covered by the French scheme.

Language and opening

Only some banks publish their savings pages in English: Keytrade Bank, MeDirect, KBC and Hello bank!. The others publish in Dutch and French, and their legally required information sheets are in those languages too. Most accounts can be opened online once you are a client; a few still need a branch visit.

The providers compared

Banks are listed in score order, as in the table. Rates are gross annual rates as published on our check date and change often.

1. Keytrade Bank 6.2/10

Ranked 1 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Savers with larger balances who want the best uncapped fidelity rate and English documentation.

Keytrade Bank is the Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank, a French bank. It is online only, with English savings pages and English product terms, which makes it one of the easiest banks here for an English speaker to understand.

Its best account is High Fidelity (Cat. A): a base rate of 0.50% plus a fidelity premium of 1.50%, for a total of 2.00% on money left twelve months. The limit is None (Cat. A, no conditions), which is the point: this is the best uncapped account we found. Keytrade does not offer a higher-rate monthly booster, so it is a home for a lump sum rather than for a monthly plan.

There are no management or withdrawal fees; letters sent by post are charged. The account is for online use only (Online only (account for online use)). The documents asked from newcomers were not published on the pages we read. Complaints go to its Quality Care Service by email.

One difference to know: as a branch of a French bank, deposits are protected by the French deposit guarantee scheme, not the Belgian one. Keytrade also notes that the tax exemption applies to private individuals resident in Belgium.

Keytrade suits savers with a larger balance who want the best uncapped rate and documents in English.

2. MeDirect 6.2/10

Ranked 2 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Online savers who want most of the return as base rate (flexible money) and English pages.

MeDirect is an online bank with an English savings comparison page. It ties with Keytrade on our score but takes a different approach: more of its return is base rate, so you earn it from day one.

Its best account is Essential Savings (Cat. B). The base rate is 1.40% and the fidelity premium 0.80%, for a total of 2.20%. The catch is the limit: Max €25,000. For larger sums, its best uncapped option is Fidelity Savings (Cat. A): 0.20% + 1.50% = 1.70%, which puts most of the return back into the fidelity premium.

How to open: On the bank's website (online use only). There are no branches. App, contract and support language were not verified, so expect at least some documents in Dutch or French.

The high base rate is what makes MeDirect useful for expats. In your first year in Belgium you may need cash for a rental deposit, furniture or a car at short notice. Money withdrawn before twelve months still earned the base rate, and at MeDirect that base rate is a large part of the total. MeDirect’s English page also restates the yearly exemption ceiling.

It suits online savers who want flexible money working from day one, and who have an amount that fits under the cap.

3. KBC / KBC Brussels 5.9/10

Ranked 3 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: KBC current-account holders who can set aside a fixed monthly amount and want English product information.

KBC is one of the big Belgian banks and, in Brussels, operates as KBC Brussels. It publishes English versions of its savings pages, and many expats already hold their current account there.

Its best account is KBC-Start2Save (Cat. B): 1.65% base plus 1.50% fidelity, so 3.15% on money left a year. The conditions are strict: Max €500/month via monthly automatic order only; one Start2Save per person. Start2Save can only be fed by one automatic monthly order, and KBC returns any transfer above the cap in full. You cannot top it up by hand.

For everything else, the uncapped account is weak: KBC-Spaarrekening: 0.40% + 0.20% = 0.60%, one of the lowest uncapped totals in this guide. Paper statements are charged; the account itself is free. How to open as a newcomer: not publishedad on the pages we read; KBC refers clients to its branches and its digital channels.

KBC suits existing KBC current-account holders who can set aside a fixed sum every month and like having product information in English. Keep a lump sum elsewhere.

4. ING Belgium 5.9/10

Ranked 4 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Savers who want a decent uncapped fidelity rate at a large branch bank.

ING Belgium is a large branch bank with web banking and self-banking. Its product pages were unreachable when we checked, so we relied on its official product sheet and its English newsroom.

The best account is ING Tempo Savings (Cat. B), with 1.60% base and 1.50% fidelity, a total of 3.10%. Deposit limit: check current pricead. We could not confirm the cap on an ING product page, so check it before you set up a monthly order.

The uncapped account is better than at most branch banks: ING Spaarrekening (Cat. A): 0.10% + 1.40% = 1.50%, with no minimum or maximum deposit according to the product sheet. How to open: ING Spaarrekening: in a branch or on the bank's website. The product sheet also lists a yearly charge for postal and other costs, and the fidelity premium is paid four times a year, on fixed dates.

English is limited to the newsroom announcements we could read; the language of the product pages and the app could not be checked.

ING suits savers who want a branch bank with a reasonable uncapped fidelity rate and a high-rate monthly account, and who can handle Dutch or French paperwork.

5. Argenta 5.8/10

Ranked 5 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Savers who want a high uncapped fidelity rate plus a €500/month booster account and can manage in Dutch or French.

Argenta is a Belgian savings bank with branches across the country. Its savings pages exist in Dutch and French only. Its regulator status is shown as unverified only because the National Bank list was unreachable and the FSMA record did not show the credit-institution entry; it is a well-established Belgian bank.

Argenta has two strong accounts. The booster is Groeirekening (Cat. B), with 1.65% base and 1.50% fidelity, so 3.15%, limited to Max €500 per month. The uncapped account is Getrouwheidsrekening (Cat. A): 0.20% + 1.50% = 1.70%, among the highest uncapped totals in this guide.

Watch the timing. Argenta raised the rates on its fidelity account and two others in September 2026, and deposits made before that date keep the old fidelity premium. Money you add now earns the current rate.

There are no fees on Argenta’s regulated accounts, except postage if you choose paper statements. How to open: Groeirekening: via the app or a branch. Newcomer documents were not published.

6. Belfius 5.8/10

Ranked 6 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Belfius clients who save a fixed amount monthly and want the highest booster rate found.

Belfius is a Belgian bank with branches, Belfius Direct Net and the Belfius Mobile app. No English version of its savings pages was found.

On rate, Belfius has the strongest booster we found: Belfius Flow (Cat. B), paying 1.83% base plus 1.50% fidelity, so 3.33%. The cap is Max €600 per month, a little higher than the usual monthly cap on similar accounts. The uncapped option is Belfius Fidelity (Cat. A): 0.15% + 1.50% = 1.65%.

How to open: Branch, Belfius Direct Net or Belfius Mobile. Newcomer documents were not published on the pages we read.

7. Hello bank! (BNP Paribas Fortis) 5.8/10

Ranked 7 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: English-speaking newcomers who are comfortable with an app-only bank and save up to €500/month.

Hello bank! is the app-only brand of BNP Paribas Fortis. Its savings pages are in English, and accounts are opened in the app, which makes it one of the more accessible options for a newcomer. The BNP Paribas Fortis-branded pages were down when we checked, so this entry covers the Hello bank! offer only.

The best account is Boost Savings Account (Cat. B): 1.75% base, 1.50% loyalty bonus, 3.25% in total. The limits: Max €500/month; 1 account per (co-)ownership; no cash. If you are paid in cash or want to deposit cash, this account will not take it.

Outside the booster, the rate drops sharply: the general account is Savings Account: 0.30% + 0.20% = 0.50%. A Savings Account Plus pays more but has a balance limit. Hello bank! notes that deposits are covered by the deposit protection scheme.

How to open: Via the Hello bank! app. Branches are not a channel. The app’s language and the contract language were not verified.

9. vdk bank 5.0/10

Ranked 9 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Monthly savers in Flanders who want a high booster rate.

vdk bank is a Belgian bank. Its site is in Dutch and French only. As with Argenta, its regulator status shows as unverified only because the official lists we needed were unreachable or incomplete.

The booster is Ritme Spaarrekening (Cat. B): 1.67% base and 1.50% fidelity, so 3.17%, with a limit of Max €500 per calendar month. The uncapped option is lower: Rentespaarrekening (Cat. A): 0.20% + 0.40% = 0.60% (rates 'valid on 7 July 2025' per the page). Note that vdk’s own page for that account shows rates dated July 2025, so confirm the current rate before you move money.

How to open: Branch, mobile@vdk, online@vdk or the website. Newcomer documents were not published.

vdk suits monthly savers in Flanders who read Dutch and want one of the higher booster rates.

10. Beobank 4.1/10

Ranked 10 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Savers parking €50,000 or more who already bank with Beobank.

Beobank is a Belgian bank. Its savings pages are in Dutch and French; only its online banking login page was found in English.

Its best account is Save Plus (Cat. B), balance ≥ €50,000, paying 0.30% base and 1.50% fidelity, so 1.80%. The condition is the opposite of the other banks: Min €50,000 for 1.50% fidelity (0.50% below). Below that threshold the fidelity premium is much lower. The best uncapped account is Fidelity Plus (Cat. A): 0.15% + 0.65% = 0.80%.

How to open: not publishedad on the page we read. Beobank Online uses itsme or a Digipass to log in.

Beobank only makes sense for savers who already bank there and can park a large balance. For most newcomers, the rates below that threshold are lower than at most banks in this guide.

Ranked 11 of 11 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Savers who prioritise a sustainability-focused bank over rate.

Triodos is a Dutch bank with a Belgian branch that positions itself as a sustainability-focused bank. Its savings pages are in Dutch and French; the English address returned an error.

If you save a fixed amount every month

This is where the best rates are. Belfius Flow, Hello bank! Boost, vdk Ritme, Argenta Groeirekening, KBC Start2Save and Crelan GoSave all reward a regular monthly deposit up to a cap. Set up a standing order from your current account on the day after your salary arrives. KBC returns any transfer above the Start2Save cap and accepts only one automatic order; check the rules of the others on their information sheets before planning to top up by hand.

Because the fidelity premium only comes after twelve months, a monthly plan takes a year to show its full rate. Each monthly deposit starts its own twelve-month clock.

If you have a lump sum to park

Capped accounts cannot take a lump sum. Look at the “best account with no amount limit” column instead. Keytrade Bank High Fidelity had the highest uncapped total we found, followed by Argenta and MeDirect. If you may need part of the money within the year, prefer an account with a higher base rate, because the fidelity premium on withdrawn money is lost.

Above the yearly tax-free ceiling, interest on regulated accounts is taxed. Splitting a large amount across several banks does not raise the ceiling, because it applies per taxpayer.

If you do not read Dutch or French

Keytrade Bank, MeDirect, KBC and Hello bank! publish their savings pages in English. Of these, Keytrade and MeDirect are online-only banks with good uncapped and base rates, KBC has a branch network, and Hello bank! is app-only. The legally required savers’ information sheets may still be in Dutch or French; a translation tool is enough to read the rate table.

If you have only just arrived

Many banks open a savings account alongside a current account at the same bank, and you should expect to be asked for proof of your Belgian address. Register at your commune first, open the current account, then add the savings account. Remember that the tax exemption is described as applying to residents of Belgium; until your registration is complete, ask the bank how it will treat your interest.

Step by step: opening a regulated savings account

  1. Decide your mix: a monthly booster account, a lump-sum account, or both.
  2. Check the category letter and the cap on the bank’s savers’ information sheet.
  3. Open a current account at that bank if you do not have one. Bring your passport or residence card and proof of address.
  4. Open the savings account online, in the app or in a branch.
  5. For a booster, set a monthly standing order at or below the cap.
  6. Note the date of each deposit. Money must stay twelve months to earn the fidelity premium.
  7. Each spring, add up the interest from all your regulated accounts and check it against the tax-free ceiling.

Our verdict

For a lump sum with no cap and documents in English, Keytrade Bank is the pick. MeDirect is better for money you may need before a year, thanks to its higher base rate. KBC and ING suit savers who want a big branch bank, with KBC strongest on English information and ING on its uncapped rate. Argenta, Belfius and Hello bank! offer the best monthly booster accounts, with Belfius paying the most and Hello bank! being the easiest to use in English. Crelan and vdk are solid branch banks for Dutch or French speakers. Beobank only fits large balances, and Triodos is a choice made for its sustainability approach rather than its rate.

Frequently asked questions

How much savings interest is tax-free in Belgium in 2026?

€1,020 of interest per taxpayer per year on regulated savings accounts (income year 2026), or €2,040 on an account held by spouses or legal cohabitants. Above that, 15% withholding tax applies. Source.

Is the €1,020 exemption per account or per person?

Per taxpayer. Wikifin says you must add up the interest on all your regulated savings accounts; if it exceeds €1,020 and not enough withholding tax was deducted, you declare the excess in your tax return. Source.

What is the difference between the base rate and the fidelity premium?

The base rate is earned daily from the day after deposit at the latest. The fidelity premium is only earned on money that stays on the account for 12 consecutive months. Source.

Why do the best rates come with a €500 monthly limit?

These are category B accounts, which carry amount conditions such as a maximum monthly deposit or balance. Examples: Belfius Flow (max €600/month), Argenta Groeirekening, KBC-Start2Save, Hello bank! Boost, Crelan GoSave and vdk Ritme (max €500/month). Source.

Which uncapped regulated savings account paid the most on 2 November 2026?

Among the banks checked, Keytrade Bank High Fidelity (0.50% + 1.50% = 2.00%), followed by Argenta Getrouwheidsrekening and MeDirect Fidelity Sparen (1.70%). Source.

Are savings with a foreign bank's Belgian branch protected?

They fall under the home-country scheme. Keytrade Bank, the Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank SA, states its deposits are protected by the French deposit guarantee system. Source.

Can I open a savings account in English?

Some banks publish their savings pages in English (KBC, Keytrade Bank, MeDirect, Hello bank!). Argenta, Belfius, Crelan, vdk and Triodos savings pages were only found in Dutch/French. Source.
